What is Skilled Nursing?

Understanding Medical and Rehabilitation Support

Skilled nursing provides 24-hour medical care for individuals who need a higher level of clinical support.

This level of care may be recommended following surgery, illness, injury, or when ongoing medical needs require supervision from licensed nursing staff.

Skilled nursing care may include:

  • nursing care available at all times
  • physical therapy to improve strength and mobility
  • occupational therapy to support daily living skills
  •  speech therapy
  • swallow therapy and cognitive therapy
  • recovery support after hospitalization
  • longer-term care for complex medical needs

Ann McMann, Residential Services Director for the Grand Traverse Pavilions, notes that families often begin learning about skilled nursing during times of change.

“When health needs become more complex, families often feel unsure about what level of care is appropriate. We help them understand what support is available and what may help improve comfort and quality of life.”

Rehabilitation services play an important role in helping individuals regain strength and independence when possible.

Skilled nursing focuses not only on medical care, but also on supporting dignity and wellbeing.

When medical needs change or recovery support is needed, it can help to talk through available options. Reach out to us at 231-932-3000 or email anytime.  We are here to help.
