Don was admitted to rehabilitation on March 12 after experiencing repeated falls caused by sudden dizziness. The episodes were unpredictable and frightening, often forcing him to stop and sit without warning.
“I fell four times and never knew when it was going to happen. It really scared me.”
When he arrived, Don’s balance was poor and his activity level was low. Simple movements felt difficult, and his confidence had been shaken. At the same time, he was facing another serious challenge, a battle with cancer. Despite everything, he began therapy, determined to regain his strength and stability.
Over time, that determination led to meaningful progress.
“A month ago I couldn’t even do half of what I can do now.”
As he improved, Don credits his success to the professionalism and consistency of the entire team. From nursing to therapy, he found every interaction to be supportive and encouraging.
“This place stands second to none. I have had an incredible journey here. It’s because of the professionalism and knowledge. Everything from the nurses to the CNAs, everyone I have worked with has been so good. I could not have found a better place to do this, and I’m glad I came here.”
Beyond the clinical care, it was the way he was treated each day that made a lasting impact.
“They smile and acknowledge you. I feel like part of the therapy family.”
One relationship in particular helped shape both his recovery and his mindset. Working with Jill pushed him to stay focused and keep moving forward, even during difficult moments.
“When I was battling cancer, Jill did not hesitate or feel sorry for me. She said we are going to get it done, and she stuck with it.”
With that encouragement, Don continued to make steady gains, rebuilding strength, balance, and confidence in his daily routine. During his stay, he also received life changing news. He is now cancer free.
Reflecting on his experience, he struggles to fully put it into words.
“I just don’t know what to say. They are just so good. It’s incredible, all they are missing are their capes. They are my heroes.”
After weeks of hard work, Don is now preparing for discharge. While he looks forward to returning home, he says leaving will not be easy.
“Leaving tomorrow will be bittersweet. From day one until now, it has all been absolutely incredible.”
He plans to continue his recovery through outpatient therapy at the Wellness Center, confident in the team that helped him get this far.
“I am coming back for outpatient. This is a place I trust. They made me feel safe. There is no other place I want to be doing therapy.”
Looking back on where he started, Don knows how different things could have been.
“If I didn’t come here, I hate to think where I’d be.”
For Don, choosing Grand Traverse Pavilions meant finding more than just rehabilitation. It meant finding a team that supported him through every challenge and helped him become stronger, more confident, and prepared for everyday life.
