Peter underwent emergency bilateral knee surgery on November 24, affecting both knees. Following surgery, he was placed in full leg braces from his upper thighs to his ankles and was completely bedbound. For eight weeks, he could not move his legs and required total care, what could have been an overwhelming experience made easier by a team that was consistently present and supportive.
“The staff here were very caring and responsive to my needs,” Peter shared.
As soon as he was able, Peter began therapy, starting the long process of rebuilding strength while still in braces. His recovery, however, was far from simple. He experienced several setbacks, including multiple hospital readmissions. An infection in his left knee required antibiotics, but an allergic reaction led to additional complications, including blood clots. Later, a third hospital visit for pneumonia added another challenge to an already difficult journey. Through it all, the team remained steady.
“Staff was very supportive and recognized what I needed, even during the setbacks.”
When his doctor finally removed the braces, it marked a major turning point. Peter began learning how to stand and then how to walk again. Over the past two months, he has worked closely with the therapy team to regain mobility and independence.
“The therapy staff has been great. I can now walk about 25 feet with a walker, including turning, and I am able to stand and pivot.”
Progress did not come quickly, but it came steadily. When he started, he could barely stand for 20 seconds. Now, he can stand for a full minute and even take a hand off his walker to complete daily tasks, small victories that have made a big difference in his confidence.
Beyond his own progress, the team also worked closely with his family to prepare for a safe transition home.
“They have done a great job training my wife to help me with standing and pivoting. They have taught us so much about transfers and daily activities.”
Peter is especially grateful for the care he received from the nursing team.
“I cannot say enough about the CNAs here. They are very good and very responsive.”
After four months of recovery, much of it delayed by the initial immobility, Peter is proud of how far he has come.
“It has been a long journey, but I have really progressed.”
Originally, he and his wife had moved to the area two years ago to slow down and enjoy life, spending time reading, relaxing, and cooking. Now, those simple goals are back within reach. As he prepares for discharge, Peter plans to continue his recovery through outpatient therapy at the Wellness Center.
“I want to continue therapy here because the staff is not only caring, but very professional. They supported me through every setback, and I really appreciate that.”
For Peter, choosing Grand Traverse Pavilions meant finding a team that stayed with him through every step of a long and challenging recovery, helping him move forward with strength, confidence, and renewed independence.
